"Megisti" - the biggest or greatest

 

Our Island's historical name may not reflect its size in Greece's Dodecanese Islands, but of the archipelago where it is located - its 12 km2 is certainly the biggest.

Our Heritage

Kastellorizo

 

From the 12th Century, our Island was known as Kastellorizo. "Kastello" was from the Italian word for castle, and "rizo" from the reddish colour of the rocks on the island, and the colour of the castle at sunset.
